COULD I LEAVE YOU from Follies

This is a great song for acting... it allows you to play sarcasm, anger, wit, hurt, playfulness, irony. But being Sondheim, it is a little difficult to sing precisely... that is, the lyrics move fast and the melody in certain phrases is characteristically "odd"... but eventually you can get your mouth around it. Its a long piece and I dont know how often Ill get to sing the whole thing as an audition piece. It doesnt lend itself well to a "16 bar audition." For a mature voice, this is a great song. But now find someone who can accompany you! The music requires a seriously deft musician.

Key

Such a great instrumentation, especially for an audition. But the key is not the same key as Stephen Sondheims broadway production, it should be in Bb.

Classic Sondheim!

"Follies" is one of the best musicals that was ever presented on a Broadway stage. This song is one of the best of the best. Its sweet waltz-like melody ironically belies the caustic lyrics. This piece gives the singer an excellent chance to show off both vocal and acting chops. It can easily be programmed into a concert, a show or a recital.
