Jessica (Betts; Allman Brothers)
This is a guitar song, but I play it on the keyboard; the Allman Brothers were one of my favorite guitar groups in the 1970s. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Duane Allman at #2 in their list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time, second only to Jimi Hendrix and in 2011 he was ranked #9. His tone (achieved with a Gibson Les Paul and two 50-watt bass Marshall amplifiers) was named "one of the greatest guitar tones of all time" by Guitar Player. This song was actually written by Richard (Dicky) Betts, also an outstanding, highly-ranked guitarist for this band. Ive always loved this song, along with Melissa, and Ramblin Man (I also have the sheet music to those two songs), two other great songs by this band. This is a wonderful, sweet upbeat (undoubtedly like the actual person Jessica who inspired this song) tune with nice solos. It reminds me of "Peppermint Pattie" by Vince Guiraldi, only the style of this song is southern rock/blues, and Guiraldis song is of the jazz-infused "Charlie Brown" genre. This is a fun, nostalgic song from the 1970s, one of the most prolific and creative eras in modern music history for songwriting.
