American Pie

Product Information

From Sheet Music Magazine: This is one of the most cryptic songs to ever hit #1. McLean refuses to talk about what the song means. "If I told people what I meant, they'd just say 'No you didn't!'" he claims. Somewhere in the narrative is the history of rock and roll, from 1950 to 1971, centering on the day the music died - the day the plane carrying Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper crashed. McLean does reveal that the recording starts off in mono and slowly separates to stereo as the events in the song become more modern.

A long, long time ago I can still remember how that music used to make me smile And I knew if I had my chance that I could make those people dance and maybe they'd be happy for a while.
