Is what is written what the composer wrote?
Well either Karen Carpenter disregarded the timing completely in singing this sad lovely piece, or this arrangement has mangled the timing. Notes are crammed into bars by shortening them to semi-demi quavers - which wasnt how Karen sang them. I re-wrote the entire piece to fix the problems and to un-muddy the waters. Why some arrangers tie two (or more) lesser valued notes when a single longer-valued note exists, I dont know. It makes the printed page crammed and unnecessarily difficult. Pages crammed with dots is confronting to students - when it neednt be. For any female singers using this arrangement - remember Karen was a low alto voice. Unless your range is functioning well below middle C, you will have the change the key up. The note accuracy of the right hand is a good replication of what Karen sang, but the left hand is bereft of detail - again a common error of "commercial" arrangements. This left hand sterility renders the piece a little mundane to play as a solo pianist - a great shame. Still its a good exercise in composition for students to use the given chords to create something more intricate for themselves.
