Stephen Sondheim, Being Alive
11/24/2015 4:49:49 PMThis is one of the greatest theater songs of the last half century. The texture of the accompaniment is just a little bit thin at the beginning and perhaps a bit thick at the climax. A sensitive accompanist will suit the texture to the abilities of the singer. The feel of the accompaniment overall is quite supportive and as true as possible to the pit band arrangement. It is a solo song here despite originally having a fair number of interventions from other characters. But this is the only way it can be done as a solo song.
