Covers by Roberta Flack and Bob James are the standard for this tune

I remember growing up and hearing this Gene McDaniels("Hundred Pounds of Clay""Compared to What")tune sung by Roberta Flack in the mid- seventies and loved the easy groove that would later define and become a standard for the budding "smooth jazz" style. Interestingly, the rhythm section on the Flack cover also released an instrumental version of this tune arranged by keyboardist Bob James on his album "One" for CTI and the rest is smooth jazz history. The changes on this chart are true to what was recorded both for the Flack and instrumental versions enhanced and buffed--of course--by the musical mastery of Roberta Flack, Bob James, and all the other great musicians of that rhythm section. Its a timeless contemporary jazz piece if there ever was one.
